Stagg boys basketball coach Marty Struss indicated that the program is reaping benefits from lessons learned during a challenging rebuilding year. He noted that early-season progress reflects increased experience, maturity, and commitment from his roster.
“We’re seeing the dividends now,” said Struss, Head Coach. “A lot of guys got to play and got chances they normally wouldn’t have had. That experience is showing this season.”
According to Struss, Stagg entered last season with limited varsity experience after graduating a senior-heavy group that had been one of the strongest teams in school history. Younger players were placed in significant roles, leading to a tough year in terms of wins and losses but providing valuable game exposure.
Struss highlighted that this experience has translated into growth this season, particularly among returning contributors. Senior Omar Barakat has emerged as a consistent producer and leader after committing to offseason development. He has earned recognition for his practice habits and set a standard for teammates.
Junior Dovydas Zuperka has continued to develop in his second varsity season, combining size with perimeter shooting ability while improving his rebounding and defensive impact. His versatility reflects the modern, positionless style of basketball emphasized in the program.
The team operates under a “Taking Stairs” mindset, prioritizing effort, accountability, and daily improvement over shortcuts. With a shot clock now featured in many games, Stagg has embraced a faster, more skill-driven style while focusing on controllable areas such as execution, communication, and competitiveness.
